The Flex Deck Story:

Where: Sitting in Stamford, Connecticut and in the middle of a very cold December, we were dreaming about an upcoming backpacking trip to Havasu Falls near Supai, Arizona in the Grand Canyon.

Why: Preparing for the hiking and camping we had ahead, we started looking for games that were light, fun and travel friendly to take with us. Cards, word games and dominoes were the first three on our list.

Cards were the lightest, most compact option so we started to wonder if there was a deck that combined all of them in one clean design. We couldn’t find it.

Who: As a bit of a nerd, this was the year where Mike fell into a deep hole of researching playing cards and their history. He learned illustrator, made many prototypes and with the help from friends, family and strangers feedback, settled on the design you see below for their trip.

What: We played word games, double-nine dominoes, rummy, spades.

After our trip, we started working with the United States Playing Card Company to be sure that if we brought a deck to market, that it would be made as near by as possible and at the quality expected from a company that has been making cards since 1867.

We made a deck made of eco-friendly materials:

  • Veggie based inks

  • Starch based laminates

  • Aqueous (water) based coatings

  • Sustainable forest papers

Goal: Our hope is to be some small part of your adventure and fun. Where you go, who you play with and what you do with a Flex Deck is up to you, we just hope you enjoy your time with it and if possible, drop us a review and/or line. Who did you play with? What did you teach them to play or what did you learn? Where did you go? Is there anything we can do better?

Gratitude: We’ve seen the Flex Deck shipped to thousands of people across the nation. We’re so happy to know a Flex Deck is being played at tables including but not limited to: kitchens, classrooms, campsites, planes, trains and research stations. If you know any astronauts or anyone else in similar situations that may need some solid fun bang for their buck and packing for a small space - please point them our way.

If you’ve been with us since the beginning or are just joining us in our story, in the most sincere way possible via a website, thank you!
